Best practices

This work package is designed to enhance and standardize proton therapy practices across the EU. It aims to do this by identifying and sharing best practices among Radiotherapy Technologists (RTTs) and dosimetrists. The initiative will establish a European proton therapy network, promoting better harmonization and integration of procedures that are crucial for successful treatment outcomes.

Key activities include optimizing patient simulation, image processing, treatment planning and evaluation, quality assurance, and treatment execution. These are all vital to ensure the high-quality delivery of proton therapy. By involving experts from EPTN and ESTRO, the project aims to tackle challenges in these areas and set up a solid framework for ongoing improvement in clinical practices.

The anticipated outcomes of this work package include a comprehensive collection of best practices, encapsulated in white papers for each of the seven identified workflow steps. These resources will be widely available and are expected to directly influence clinical practices in participating countries.

Furthermore, an exchange program for RTTs and dosimetrists will encourage the sharing and testing of these practices, enhancing the collaborative network and supporting the harmonization of proton therapy across Europe. The project will gauge its success through both qualitative and quantitative indicators, such as the number of best practices developed, workshop participation, and feedback on the practical application of the guidelines in clinical settings.

In the first step, the areas to formulate best practices will be identified. This will be done through a workshop. In the second step, propositions will be formulated to be used in the third step. According to the Delphi methodology, we will arrive at best practices.
